
AIM-9X PROGRAM SUMMARY
The AIM-9X Sidewinder missile is a true dual-use missile, effective in either air-to-air or surface-to-air applications with no modifications required. It is compatible with the U.S. Army’s ground-based multi-mission launcher. The AIM-9X is the newest member in the family of AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range missiles produced by Raytheon. It is actively deployed on U.S. Navy and Air Force F-15, F-16 and F-18 aircraft, and also in the air forces of 18 international customers.

- Testing work on the AIM-9X Block II version began in September 2008.
- By January 2013, the AIM-9X Block II was about halfway through its operational testing and performing better than expected.
- As of June 2013, Raytheon has delivered 5,000 AIM-9X missiles to the armed services.
- In February 2015, the U.S. Army successfully launched an AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder from the new Multi-Mission Launcher (MML), a truck-mounted missile launch container that can hold 15 of the missiles.

- January 16, 2017: The Army has now fired a Miniature Hit-to-Kill Missile, AIM-9X Sidewinder and Hellfire missile from its Multi-Mission Launcher.
- F-16V or Viper is the latest variant of the F-16 Fighting Falcon fourth generation, multi-role, fighter aircraft manufactured by Lockheed Martin. The F-16V can be armed with a range of air-to-air missiles (AAMs), including AIM-9 Sidewinder, Magic II and ASRAAM short-range AAMs, as well as AIM-7, Sky Flash and AIM-120 medium-range AAMs. T
- May 16, 2016: The Navy is working on a Block II+ version of the AIM-9X that is being tailored for the F-35.
